Shaping scouts' skills- Metoda EDGE
Admitting new pupils to our team, We must teach them many different scout techniques. Knots, fire piles, Ciphers ... how to teach, to teach?
One of the methods of learning new skills is the EDGE method.
E- explain- explain
D- demonstrate- demonstrate
G- guide- lead
E- enable- turn on, activate, run (Let me make yourself)
Explain
Take as an example building a bonfire stack. First, explain the basic information about a given focal point. Why do we light it, what wood and the fireplace do you use. Describe briefly what building looks like.
Thanks to this step, The information is provided for the first time, generally, But it allows you to understand the idea of a given skill. Give the participants, that it's not time for questions yet. They should hear at the moment (Interesting and fairly fast, A lecture on bonfires is a poor idea).
Demonstrate
Now it's time to show step by step what you will do to make the pile come out perfectly. Break down every act performed into the first factors, Let me see a hub up close, Pay attention to the differences between the first added sticks and those at the end. In this step, encourage you to ask questions. The effect of this point is to be a beautiful focal pile made by the lecturer.
Notice, that immediately after hearing in the first point, You activate the eyes of children. Scouts heard what to do first, And now they see. In addition, you prove yourself that you have a given skill and no one has to take your word for it 😉
It can be like that, that it will be hard for you to focus the attention of scouts on what you say. Dlatego sprawdź artykuł Dlaczego harcerze nie słuchają
Lead
When you demonstrated what a stack building looks like, you allow it, that the participants would try themselves. Be patient, Explain again if necessary, Earlier, provide materials (or collect yourself). Correct the mistakes made and explain why it is like that, as you presented earlier. This is still a stage of learning- It cannot be said yet, that someone has fully acquired a given skill, but he can experience it himself. If necessary- repeat everything again.
Let me make yourself
When you are sure, that all previous steps have been completed, Check the scout's knowledge by building a stack without your interference. The effect should be beautiful, Perfectly burning bonfire 🙂
The EDGE method allows you to learn through three senses - sight, hearing and touch. Activating them just, is crucial for full understanding of a given activity and significantly increases the likelihood of acquiring skills. And that's what we all mean!
