COORDINATES ON THE MAP

Coordinates allow you to accurately determine the location of a point on the map. This is possible thanks to a cartographic or topographic grid composed of vertical and horizontal lines corresponding to meridians and parallels.. When determining the position, always enter the vertical coordinate first. Some parts of the map may be additionally marked with letters. To accurately determine the location of a point on a topographic map, find the nearest vertical line and read the corresponding coordinate at the bottom of the map (in our example 04). Then estimate, how many tenths separate our point from this line (in this case 5). The same is determined by the horizontal coordinate. (It is simple in this case, because the point lies on the topographic grid line with the coordinate 41).

Determining the exact location – The above method allows you to accurately determine the location of a point on the map using a six-digit notation (045410), where the first three numbers represent the vertical coordinate, and the next three – horizontal.
