In a healthy body – healthy scout

Weak scout, to, especially in camps, scout unhelpful. Independently, are we talking about cheeks, scouts of the Untouched Trail, junior scouts, older ones, travelers or instructors, everyone should, on their own and as far as possible, take care of the hygiene of the body and mind.

B-P wrote in his book

Scout education would not be complete, if it hadn't been trying to inculcate in the boys (currently: also in girls) rules of hygiene and physical fitness

We as instructors, we have the task, also my own example, teach scouts and girl scouts the basics of taking care of your physical and mental condition. In this article, I will discuss these issues with simple suggestions on how to develop these factors in adolescents.

Body hygiene

It consists of aspects such as activity (efficiency) physical, Healthy Eating, maintaining personal hygiene. Consistency plays an important role here, because, as at the camp, the instructors make sure that the curfew is obeyed, nutritious meals, or morning warm-up, either at home or at school, the scout himself has to learn about the benefits of taking care of his condition.

Physical fitness

Adequate physical condition is an extremely important basis for scout life. There are too many people in our environment, who get out of breath when going up the stairs, do they constantly complain about runny nose and sore throat.

But let's ask ourselves a question: WHAT FOR? Why take care of your health?

- because “I have a sincere will (…) to help others willingly ". By destroying your body, you limit your possibilities to help others

- because you don't want to get old in age 20 years. The older we are, the more we tend to be sedentary and lazy, which shapes what I call premature tetrics in young people- become grandparents, while they are still youngsters

So what can we do, to take care of yourself?

At home: poranna rozgrzewka- stretching, running, doing sports
At school: uczestniczenie w zajęciach Wfu- no matter what they look like ;), taking advantage of breaks in the fresh air, walks after school
At camp: uczestniczenie w zaprawie porannej (here is the role of the instructor, that the warm-ups are specific and conscientiously selected according to the scouts' abilities), field exercises, fitness classes
At the meeting: dynamiczne formy pracy, as many outdoor activities as possible.

Healthy Eating

For the body to work, needs a specific dose of fuel. Take a look at what you eat, limit the consumption of simple sugars (white sugar, candy), drink a lot of water.

At home: at least 3 meals a day
At school: pożywne drugie śniadanie, healthy snack during the break (fruit, yoghurts)
At camp: odpowiednio dobrane posiłki, variety of food products
At the meeting: dostęp do czystej wody, tea, juices. It is not necessarily the responsibility of the team- it's not a problem for a scout, to have a bottle with something to drink with you at the collection.

Maintaining personal hygiene

Something, which gives me mixed feelings, it's the mentality of some people. “I am a scout, I won't eat from the floor?”, “When I went to camps, we washed ourselves in the river and we all survived ", “Not washing yourself strengthens your immune system! We have to acquire it somehow!”.

Well, the matter is not so simple. Let me skip food from the ground and give this aspect to any individual interpretation. However, walking dirty and smelly is not a matter of "being a scout", just being an unhygienic dirty guy. You were bathing in the river? Maybe, but exactly- you were taking a bath!

The instructor's task is to enable scouts to maintain personal hygiene. He is responsible for cleanliness, not only in tents and at the campsite. Gaining immunity is not to walk in muddy clothes and mask the odor with deodorants, just not limiting contact with the factors that build our immune system. Regular washing is fine 😉

At home: regularne kąpiele, showers, brushing your teeth in the morning, in the evening and after a meal.
At school: mycie rąk przed jedzeniem
At camp: przestrzeganie obowiązujących pór kąpieli i czasu na toaletę poranną i wieczorną. Here I look at the instructors- appropriately choose the amount of time to wash yourself according to the number of camp participants
At the meeting: dostęp do toalet, water and soap, monitoring the cleanliness of scouts before collection.

Mental hygiene

We often forget about this aspect. We focus so much on physical fitness, that we forget about our brains. Researches proves, that people are becoming more and more stressed, discouraged and lazy.

Take some time to do this, to learn stress control techniques, a healthy nap or simply- read a good book.

At home: czytanie książek, afternoon nap, limiting electronics an hour before bedtime to the necessary minimum
At school: wcześniejsze przygotowywanie się, to avoid stress before the tests, by cards, "Slacking", that is, "stop worrying about it, over which you have no influence ”😉
At camp: odpowiednio długa cisza poobiednia, monitoring sleep hygiene, uncommon alarms and night games,
At the meeting: angażujące zajęcia, forms of work appropriately matched to the age and skills.
