How to work with a multi-level team?

Everywhere there is a lot of advice and instructions on working with scout teams, starszoharcerskich and wandering. Multi-tier teams have gone a long way, so I will try to explain a bit how I have been doing so far, when various methodological divisions appeared in my unit.

According to the Instructions for creating a cluster, team, circle and specialty club in force from 1 September 2015 year, drużyna wielopoziomowa to

“The basic organizational unit of the Polish Scouting Association operating in a troop, whose rank-and-file members are children and adolescents belonging to more than one methodological group;”

Put simply, we have many scouts of all ages. This situation causes many organizational problems for the team- must be familiar with more than one methodology. So how do you bite it, so that everything works as it should?

1. A replacement system is a must.

We cannot work without the host system. Only an association of our scouts in smaller groups, in accordance with the requirements of the methodology of appropriate age groups, it will allow us to properly educate the pupils. Therefore, the team, if he has not already done so, should divide the team members into hosts as soon as possible, patrols. The problem shows up, when it is not very possible. Then for a while (!) there may be scout groups, old-scandalous and wandering not being hosts.

2. Co-workers for appropriate methodologies

To relieve the team, he should appoint a bodyguard, who will train in appropriate methodological groups and start working with them. Who knows, maybe in a year, two will be team players?

The task of such an adjutant is to decide on the appropriate methodological riser (of course, under the supervision of the team), conducting collections, directing the work of hosts.

3. A well-functioning Team Council.

Bodyguards and the rest of the team may sit on the Council. Important however, that the hosts of appropriate methodological divisions decide on the work of their age group. Then too, decisions are made according to the methodologies:

In the scout methodology, teammate makes decisions with the help of the Council (replacement, and other members of its choice), however, focusing primarily on the target group (10-12 years). In our case, the team and bodyguards appointed to work with junior scouts have the most say. The voice of the substitutes should not be ignored!

In the oldszoharcerska methodology zastępowi służą radą i wychodzą z własnymi propozycjami pracy w drużynie. (13-15 years) The team and the adjutant have full freedom of decision, however, they should take into account the substitutes' sentence.

In the itinerant methodology, it is the oldest members who decide on their patrol and the teammate leads them in these decisions.

The councils may be held jointly or separately, it suits the team best, whichever is possible. However, you have to remember, that the latter option allows for a more thorough analysis of the problems of the respective methodological groups.

4. Analyzing the current collection system.

It is impossible to gather all divisions in one place and time every week, while using the possibilities offered by the methodologies. That is why it is worth changing your fundraising system.

Assuming, that is a month old 4 weeks, you can organize your work as follows

In the first week odbywają się zbiórki wszystkich pionów, at different times, or just in different places. The point is that it should be a collection of the methodical division, not the team.

In the second and third week odbywają się zbiórki zastępów, patrol.

In the fourth week spotyka się cała drużyna w jednym miejscu i czasie. You can opt out of the latter for the benefit of e.g.. camping together, overnight stays, events. Then the week may be empty (which I definitely do not recommend) or ranks of hosts jump in here, patrol.

Thanks to such an organization, we have an influence on the work of all methodologists. However, it is worth creating calendars, so that everyone knows when and where fundraisers take place. After a few months, everyone will remember it anyway 😉

5. A thorough and thoroughly planned team program.

The program of the multilevel team should take into account the features of all methodologies. The, intentions should be set for the entire team, but also separately for each riser. It is worth asking the appropriate governors or teammates for help. Just like with goals, schedules should also be different for different age groups.

6. Joint events of the entire team.

The entire team should be able to meet in one group at least once every two months. This favors integration and avoids situations, in which members of one team are strangers to each other. Sleepover, bivouac, rally, collection, festival ... There are many possibilities!

7. Cooperation with governors.

A steward is a person with more experience in working with teams, therefore it should be the first person to whom we turn for help. In a multi-level team, teammates and bodyguards should attend meetings of governors, properly prepared to work in their methodology.

Working with a multi-level team is a challenge, however, it gives a lot of satisfaction if it is conducted in the right way.
